Colleges and School Boards in the Niagara, Hamilton, Brant-Haldimand and Halton communities are collaborating through the School/College/Work Initiative to conduct major projects over the short and long term which will address several key priorities in strengthening the relationship between Secondary Schools and Colleges, and promoting Community College as a worthwhile destination for Secondary School students. These priority areas include:

- Curriculum Alignment
- “At Risk” Students
- Teacher Preparation
- College Promotion and Marketing
- Intermediate Students

“Destination College Video Resource Guide”
Building on the Success of the Phase 7 – SCW I Project “Destination College Video”, Phase 8 activity will result in development of a Resource Guide and lesson plans to accompany use of the video in Secondary classrooms. The resource package would target secondary teachers to deliver the "Destination College" workshop through their Career Studies compulsory Grade 10 program or as part of their Career Education and Guidance program. “Destination College" highlights the non-academic and alternative programs colleges run to meet the needs of a variety of students, such as, students at-risk. Completed video kits will be distributed through presentations at a variety of conferences or forums across the Province, wherever project partners are involved, for example, promotion at OCEA, OSCA, Student Success Conferences, Job Connect Managers meetings, and SCW Forums.

Tri-College Technology Pathways Development
This project intends to build upon the ongoing work of several of the various partners in the Regional Planning Team around Pathways development. Work already completed will be collected and updated, and new programs added, in order to develop a standard Pathways system document for all the Technology programs offered at the 3 partner colleges. Existing Pathways projects, through SCWI and other mechanisms will become partners in this initiative, including:

- Brant/Haldimand Regional Planning Team, my pathways project
- Mohawk College/Hamilton Wentworth District School Board, Pathways and Articulations committee
- Niagara College

The Pathways developed will be launched and promoted through a special event in the Golden Horseshoe Regional Planning Team’s Techno Expo Series, which will target counsellors and technology heads at Secondary Schools.

Techno Expo Series
This project will offer a variety of exciting, hands-on events at Niagara, Mohawk and Fanshawe Colleges, in order to expose Secondary and Intermediate level (Grade 7 & 8) students, teachers and parents, with the technical study opportunities available at College and the “pathways” to get there. Participants will become more familiar with Colleges as a post-secondary alternative, and understand the specific pre-requisite courses of study leading to admission. The Series intends to make use of workshops, hands-on demonstrations and term projects, for a sustained and cumulative effort over the school year. The Techno-Expo Series will be comprised of 2 distinct activities, as follows:

Technology Program Pathways Launch
- a one/half day, or evening event for Secondary teachers, counsellor, technology heads and parents, launching the Tri-College Technology Pathways system for entry into Technology programs at Fanshawe, Mohawk and Niagara Colleges

Intermediate Technology Days
- Grade 7 & 8 students would be exposed to a variety of technology equipment and program options at the participating Colleges, for example: manufacturing, construction, computer technology, electronics, transportation or mathematics

The “Roads Less Traveled: Alternative Strategies for College And Workplace Destinations” program offers innovative opportunities for Secondary students requiring alternative career paths to post-Secondary destinations.

The initiative includes three components:

1. The establishment of an umbrella organization comprised of Secondary school and College educators and industry leaders in the Waterloo, Wellington and Perth Regions, to plan and orchestra regional forums and relevant projects.

2. A series of networking forums to provide the opportunity for “Secondary teachers to talk to College teachers to talk to industry partners” about strategies that support students’ success through less conventional paths to workplace, college or apprenticeships.

3. Curriculum supporting concurrent credit, pre-apprenticeship, transition, and post-Secondary certification programs to be reviewed and developed.

This program is intended to address the needs of the 70% of students who may not chose to participate in conventional post-Secondary education programs and those that require unique programming to meet their career goals.

South Western Ontario Regional Planning Team

The colleges of St. Clair, Fanshawe, Lambton and Ridgetown have partnered to form the South Western Ontario (SWO) School / College / Work Initiative Regional Planning Team. St. Clair College, as lead partner, will act as project coordinator for the SWO Planning Team. Eight school boards and six industry groups will form the remaining membership of the SWO Planning Team. The ‘Team’ will act as a liaison and information sources for the sharing of SCWI ventures and projects; will share curriculum, program concepts, projects and new venture ideas within the regional planning group and to other SCWI regional groups within the province of Ontario. The ‘Team’ will coordinate SCWI activities within the region; will identify specific priorities and strategies in respect to curriculum alignment, creation of pathways to college, and continue to build a mutual understanding of the secondary school and college systems through staff development opportunities, and promotion and marketing of college programs.

Future Links – Work Preparation College Certificate Program
This certificate program is designed to service high school students who have been denied entry to college programs because they do not posses the minimum academic requirements. Through curriculum emphasizing vocational exploration and life skills, learners will gain an increased awareness of educational and career opportunities in order to establish and enhance clear pathways for employment. Unique to this program, is a peer mentoring course designed to assist Future Links learners with issues and challenges often faced during on-the-job work placement. Through a general education course elective, graduating year post secondary students will be assigned as one-on-one mentors to Future Links participants, during the work experience placement component of their program. This mentorship will offer hands-on real-time learning for both Future Links and graduating year post secondary students. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates who did not obtained employment will be directed to register in the Job Connect program through Youth Employment Services. Job Connect will aid in the transition to work through the wage subsidy program. Future Links will be piloted at St. Clair College commencing September 2005. Fanshawe and Lambton colleges will follow in Fall 2006.

College Writing Exemplars
• To develop forums at which teams of teachers from several schools will meet with CWE writers and other college faculty to review the exemplars.
• To develop secondary school writing projects which will help to hone such writing skills.
• To implement pilot writing projects and share results for further development.
• To create an on-going structure that will promote dialogue between secondary teachers and college faculty in the area of language development.

Apprenticeship Pathways
• To establish partnerships that facilitate an increase in the number of apprenticeship pathways for students in our region.
• To assist secondary schools to rationalize resources and to identify and develop specific programs that will provide students pathways to related apprenticeships.
• To facilitate schools and colleges in the development of models of specialized programs that are sustainable and focussed on student pathways and that meet the needs of 'at risk' students.
• To facilitate the development of articulation agreements with school boards, schools, colleges, unions and trade associations.

The goal of the “Let the Trades Begin” project is to promote careers in the skilled trades and to inform students of the College pathway to reach some of these destinations.

The first event planned for mid-November is the second annual “Skilled Trades Day for Elementary Students.” The plan is to offer a “hands-on” day of activities for elementary students in order to expose them to the skills and aptitudes required in today’s skilled trades market.

Canadore College and College Boreal will host this event. Students from the entire region, as far South as Parry Sound, East to Mattawa, West to Sturgeon Falls, and including schools in the North Bay area will be invited to attend this one day event. Workshops will be offered in a variety of skilled trade areas, including the motive power, industrial, service, and construction sectors. Students will have the opportunity to sign up for 3 different workshops, one from 3 of the 4 sectors.

The next large event, slated for the spring of 2005, is a 2 day conference on skilled trades. The target audience for this will be grades 9 and 10 and the goal here will be to expose students to “college life” with a focus on the skilled trades areas. This is a new initiative that is modeled after an event that Canadore College hosted last year.

Students will have the opportunity to visit a variety of workshops over the 2 days, will visit College dorm rooms, eat “college” food, and live the life of a student for 2 days. The hope here is that students will see what college can offer them, so that they can make an informed choice when deciding what their post secondary education might look like.

The last event planned is a “forum” to educate parents on the benefits of a College education. We hosted a similar event last year and the hope is that we can build on the success of the past to make this event even bigger and better than the year before.

To address the issue that significant gaps exist in the flow of college program information to secondary school classrooms, educators from the four local school boards and Cambrian College have formed a Secondary School /College Strategic Planning Committee to identify innovative ways to profile college programs as worthwhile options for secondary school students. Activities such as workshops, college tours, classroom demonstrations, participation in the college career fair, initiation of a student ambassador program as well as, development of resources such as subject specific websites, and career profiles are planned.

Download a Pathways Brochure Development Resource (PDF) here.

The four English and French language school boards in the region of Sudbury will be working with Cambrian College to develop a promotional workshop that will incorporate a multi-media presentation using movie clips, PowerPoint, testimonials and a verbal presentation that will educate parents and students to the career opportunities available to college graduates. A copy of the presentation would reside in each school and a process to train the trainers will be established. The presentation is targeted at secondary school teachers and students, parents, and general public. Also, a second initiative will have secondary teachers participate in college specific workshops.

The Northwestern Ontario Region encompasses a vast geographical area that extends from Marathon to the Manitoba border. Establishing a Regional Planning Team for the entire region is essential to ensure communication and consistency through partnership with our northern college, Confederation College, its off site campuses and the eight regional school boards. To work within these geographical impediments it is necessary to create a format for the Regional Planning Team that ensures success for the SCWI. A model that would be effective is one larger Regional Planning Team for all of Northwestern Ontario that meets 3-4 times per year comprised of two subdivisions, east and west, that work as smaller subgroups.

The Superior Pathways proposal is the subdivision of the Regional Planning Team-East and involves the reaching students from Thunder Bay Beardmore, Dorion, Geraldton, Longlac, Manitouwadge, Marathon, Nakina, Nipigon, Red Rock, Schreiber, and Terrace Bay. The Regional Planning Team- West involves communities from Thunder Bay to the Manitoba border. These are huge areas geographically, but will be well worth the journey for students and teachers who will be able to access the cutting edge facilities and technical expertise of Northwestern Ontario’s Confederation College and campus sites. By building program pathways, this initiative will enrich current programs for schools with limited resources while providing glimpses of what the future could hold for students here in the Northwest.

Current Reality
Ninety percent of students from Northwestern Ontario who choose College as a destination choose Confederation College. Schools Boards have many exciting partnerships with the college but a Regional Plan Team would support boards and schools in working together to support student awareness and success in college programs. Community partners are committed to supporting students in their local communities in planning their futures.

Develop administrative processes and protocol for student success including a plan for communication of articulation agreements and partnerships.

Serve as an on-going planning and communication structure to bring college faculty, teachers and admin together, and with community partners, address local priorities and issues

Curriculum Alignment and Student Pathways
• the review of existing articulation agreements and partnerships,
• the development of curriculum “pathways” that would enhance student success for one, two and three year college programs,
• the formation of teams and continued s8-18upport of existing teams consisting of secondary teachers and college faculty that would address specific curriculum concerns,

Teacher Preparation, Teacher Staff Development or Teacher Internship Programs
• continued support pre-service programs involving faculty of education students in college, apprenticeship and workplace programs (ie. Widening Horizons Phase 7 Project),
• teacher internships in college and apprenticeship programs and related workplace settings,
• professional development programs/forums involving college faculty and secondary school teachers learning and sharing with one another, and
• teacher-college faculty visitations and on-going dialogue.

Promotion and Marketing of College Programs
• presentations by college student ambassadors and college graduates
• parent information forums
• innovative marketing and communication approaches, and
• presentations by the colleges at elementary and secondary schools
